Manipulator now available for use in Canada
Canadian wheat producers have a new growth regulator option available to use now. Manipulator, from Engage agro has been tested for 3 or 4 years, but because of no US MRL’s being established, could not be used in Canadian wheat fields. That changed last week as the US finally put forward MRL’s for chlormequat chloride, the active ingredient in MANIPULATOR Plant Growth Regulator. So what does this mean for Canadian wheat growers?
Prior to the registration of Manipulator growers were left with only one option to assist with standability in wheat – Ethrel. This product works, but shortens the plant between the top node and the head – not the ideal place to increase standability. Now growers will have a new choice of timing for growth regulators. Manipulator shortens the crop in the first two nodes of the plant – giving you a very stable base for the crop. This type of product has been used in many European wheat growing regions for many years and has been the ideal timing to shorten the plant.
Manipulator has a wide application widow which is one of the biggest benefits of this product. The best results, however, are seen when Manipulator is applied at GS 30-32, according to Engage Agro. This wide timing opportunity should allow growers a little time to decide if the season is calling for this type of product as well as allow you to fit it into your schedule. The big question with the arrival of Manipulator to the market is now – do I need to use a growth regulator? One thing we do know from tests in our own fields – manipulator definitely reduces lodging. Plant growth regulators show the best results in intensely managed fields, (under high fertility) or in areas where lodging is common. Better results are usually seen with taller varieties. Looking to increase Nitrogen rates for increased yields? Maybe a good time to consider this product. I think it is always important to mention that the first step in limiting lodging should be splitting Nitrogen applications. When this is not an option, or you are already doing this and still experiencing loding – then consider Manipulator.
This product does not affect all varieties equally – we tried some on Wilkin spring wheat and it appeared to me that it almost made the crop too short. So don’t just put it in the plan because it is available. As we see this product more in the future, we should be able to tell you how each variety responds.
